Linda could barely get through the front door of my clinic...

She was leaning on her husband Jim, as they staggered sideways through the doorway.

I could tell she was in intense pain.

Just standing up — much less walking around — was agonizing.

She needed help.

In fact, every single movement was so painful, it took 20 minutes — with help from both Jim and I — just to get her lying down on the exam table.

She told me she had a major abdominal surgery 3 years before.

Then, the sciatic nerve pain began.

Sharp pain, deep in her hip. Shooting down her leg. Often causing her to crumble towards the floor.

Her doctors blamed it on sciatica — and told her she’d just have to live with it.

They gave her pills to numb the pain, but she didn’t want to spend her life dependent on prescription drugs.

She told me she “felt like a baby.” Like she just couldn’t do anything herself anymore.

To make matters worse, she thought she’d tried physical therapy…

She’d taken her doctor’s referral, gone to a big medical clinic, and spent 8 weeks doing stretches and other “standard sciatica treatments” the (white-coat) physical therapist had recommended.

But even that left her feeling like a “lost cause” — those are her words.

And then, she found our clinic.

I developed an individualized treatment plan for Linda, and here’s what happened — again, in her words…

Linda, Age 71, Pleasanton, CA

“Now after seeing Kevin at Balance and Body, I’m almost pain-free...He was very personal, and passionate, and I feel like a different person now… And just the simple things like getting in and out of my car, walking around the house and simple yard work no longer gives me problems like it used to.”

My name is Dr. Kevin Mao, and I run Balance & Body Restoration, a private physical therapy clinic in Dublin, California.

Every week, I help dozens of patients like Linda heal from sciatica pain in their hips, legs, and buttocks; as well as helping other patients with knee, neck, and back pain, shoulder pain, and various other chronic pain and injuries.

Our clinic is very unique in two big ways…

  • First, we specialilze in treating one patient at a time, giving you our full attention and care.
  • And second, we have developed treatments that go straight for the source of the pain and suffering, instead of the symptoms — so we’re often able to help patients that have basically lost hope.

If you’re just starting to look for relief from your sciatic pain — or you’re feeling a lot more like Linda was before she found us — what you’re about to read may be your first step toward some very welcome relief…

“I have sharp, shooting pain in my butt that shoots down the back of my leg. It feels like a toothache deep in my hip.  It’s gotten worse to a point where now I feel numbness in my foot and I can’t sit, drive or work. Bending over is impossible. The pain isn’t getting any better and seems to be worsening everyday”

Can you relate?

If you are:

  • Suffering with sharp shooting pain deep in your hip that shoots down your leg
  • Having trouble bending over to tie your shoes, brush your teeth, or pick up your kids or grandkids
  • Lying awake at night, unable to find a comfortable position sleeping due to intense pain in your hip or leg
  • Feeling worse symptoms first thing in the morning, taking several minutes just to get out of bed
  • Experiencing uncomfortable pain with sitting, driving, or being unable to work
  • Unable to stand or walk for longer than a few minutes, nevermind being able to exercise
  • Feeling numbness, tingling, or loss of sensation in your foot or your leg

You are likely suffering from a condition known as “sciatica”.

What Is Sciatica — And Why Does It Hurt So Bad?

Sciatica is a very painful, debilitating condition that is caused by irritation and inflammation of the “sciatic nerve”.  The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body. It travels down your hip, down the back of your leg, and into the calf and foot.

Sciatica is a condition that continues to affect more people each and every day.  As people spend more time sitting than ever, and living more sedentary lifestyles, the amount of people suffering continues to rise at an alarming rate.

But what concerns me the most are the amount of people who suffer from this condition for way longer than they should…

Or worse, being led down a path of taking dangerous painkillers or unnecessary surgeries...

Doctors have told me that I might need surgery, but said I should at least try treatments such as physical therapy, acupuncture, and exercising...But after 3 months of stretching, massage, muscle relaxants, pain-patches and creams...nothing seems to be working. I”ve had this pain for months now thinking at some point it would go away on its own, but it just seems like everyday it’s getting worse...”

Yes, it’s true, there are several natural, non-invasive solutions that do exist for sciatia.  Treatments that might include:

  • Chiropractic
  • Acupuncture
  • Physical therapy
  • Massage
  • Stretches and exercise
  • Creams, patches and ointments

The main problem being, there are so many different options you could choose, that it can be difficult to make a decision to seek treatment.  It is hard to know which treatments are safe, and effective, or which treatments could actually make your problems worse.

The Biggest Mistake You MUST Avoid While Trying to “Fix” Sciatica

The biggest mistake that most people (doctors included) make is treating sciatica like some form of muscle “tightness” that will get better with some light stretching or massage, and go away over time.

It’s common for people to even try massage, get chiropractic adjustments, or even acupuncture needles on these painful areas.

However, these treatments usually only temporarily alleviate the pain, and most of the time it just makes the problem worse.

Why?

This is because sciatica is actually caused by a “pinched nerve” either coming from a “herniated disc” (aka bulging/slipped disc), in your back, or from a tightened muscle in your hip (known as the piriformis).

Even though the symptoms of sciatica “feels” like muscle tightness, or a “muscle pull”, these “traditional” approaches will actually cause MORE stress and strain on your nerve, which will cause your symptoms to get worse.

What I want to help you understand is that it IS treatable — you could reduce your pain, or feel it disappear completely.

It can be easy to lose hope when the pain doesn't seem like it's going away after days, weeks, or even months after it starts.

But I assure you that it IS possible to heal this condition.

And it starts with a simple understanding: Healing a “nerve injury” requires a much different approach than traditional pain, or injury. And to heal this type of pain, you must treat the source of the nerve pain.

But the tricky thing is, the source of sciatic nerve pain is almost never where you feel it — and if you’re treating the pain itself, it seldom gets better, and sometimes gets worse.

The most IMPORTANT THING you need to understand about sciatica - Everything is connected

Even though you may “feel” the pain in your leg, you MUST understand that everything in the body is interconnected.

And the pain you feel in your hip or your leg is NOT the area you should be treating.

The thing is, our bodies are very smart, and are known to be able to “compensate” around certain problems.

Common examples of this might include:

  • Old injuries (like a back injury) that never fully healed
  • Back stiffness that forms from inflammation and scar tissue along your connective tissues
  • Tight hips that form from too much sitting
  • Weak “core” muscles that do not properly stabilize your body as your move

Often times people focus solely on treating the “symptoms” of leg pain and tightness, but never address these “root” underlying causes.

How do you find the REAL SOURCE of the pain?

The truth is, it is almost impossible, and unsafe and dangerous to try to treat this condition on your own.  Certain stretches, exercises, and advice might work for some people, but it could also be disastrous for others.

The reason is because every single person who suffers from sciatica may have different underlying causes.  After all, we all have different body types, past injuries, and health habits.

At Balance and Body Restoration, we’ve developed a very successful system that is able to quickly figure out the REAL source of your pain, and then create a highly personalized plan to fix it.

To do this, we use a very detailed, individualized, 4-step process that not only focuses on alleviating your pain, but also helping you get back to living a normal, better quality of life.

Balance and Body’s 4-Step Process to Eliminating Sciatica

Our 4-step approach is put in place to be absolutely certain we treat your ENTIRE body, and consider every possible, potential underlying cause of your sciatica.

We aren’t your typical “PT” clinic where we will just give you a “cookie cutter” set of exercises, or rush you through your appointment.

Instead, we are a small, quiet clinic that only sees one patient at a time.  This allows us to remain highly focused on you and your problems, and give you the level of time, energy, and attention to truly get to the bottom of this condition…

I had a badly slipped disc, and I was on the verge of going onto an operating table. I couldn’t sit to play with my kids, I was in constant pain. But they have methods that actually work here. With the things they do, I could just feel ALL of the mobility starting to come back, and made me aware of places I felt pain that I didn’t even know existed”

I was able to watch an entire film with with my kids, and actually sit through the entire thing without having to get up, or feel like I was in chronic pain…and I can like get down on the ground with them now and actually do activities with them, and being able to pay attention to them instead of just paying attention to what's going on with my body and the pain it's causing me. It's been just a wonderful change.”

Dean, Mid 30's from Livermore

I was diagnosed with degenerative discs and stenosis in my lower back. The pain had gotten so bad I’d be in tears just trying to stand in the kitchen and cook a meal. The doctors told me they’d need to do a lumbar fusion to fuse my discs and then flip me over and then fix my stenosis…but no, no, no, I wasn’t going to let them do that.”

But by coming here, oh my gosh…it’s made a world of difference. I can move better, I can breath better, I have more energy, and the treatments they make me feel so good that just takes the pain away so I can actually ENJOY moving again. I went from barely getting out of the car because of my pain, to feeling like I could literally bounce out of here”

I’m looking forward to playing with my grandkids, and going on hikes with my husband since I feel like I’ve been having to hold him back for all these years because of my pain”

Barbara from Livermore

Step 1. Getting to know you.

Too often I hear of people who see a general doctor for this problem, but barely get more than 10 or 15 minutes of “treatment”.  Doctors will often rush to prescribe medications (which just mask the problem), or even recommending unnecessary injections or surgeries (which often cause more damage than good.)

This is a HUGE problem…

But at Balance and Body, we understand just how complex the human body is, and also understand that every single person who walks into our clinic with this problem is unique and different.

Which is why we want to take the time to thoroughly get to know you.  To hear your story, and your frustrations.  And also understand what your goals are and the type of quality of life you want to live.

Understanding how to beat sciatica starts with understanding you.

To do this, we offer a no-risk, completely free 30-minute consultation.  This is to make sure that we are a good fit for each other, and to also make sure that we in fact WILL be able to help you, BEFORE you commit to a plan of care.

Step 2:  Full body Assessment

(picture of me doing an assessment)

As I said before, everything in our body is truly “connected”.  Sciatica usually develops from “compensation” for other parts of your body may not be doing their job.

The “secret” of fixing sciatica is not to treat the pain itself, but instead eliminate the “real” source of the pain.

The truth is, every person might have a different root cause.

But the good news is, with over a decade of experience, treating hundreds of people with sciatic problems around the Bay Area, we have developed a system that allows us to quickly assess the root source of your pain.

We are able to do this through something called a  “full-body mobility screen”.

A mobility screen is a head to toe assessment of your body to identify which parts of your body may be problematic.  We will uncover all of the different connections and figure out exactly what the cause of your sciatica is.

Whether it be from:

  • An old injury that was not thoroughly treated
  • Muscle or soft tissue imbalances from poor posture or habits
  • Tightness from some other part of your body causing stress to build up in your back

We will be able to quickly identify what the problem is.

From there, we will help develop a treatment plan to FIX these problems and help you find long lasting, permanent relief.

Step 3: Restore Your Mobility

Once we have identified what the underlying source of your pain, our next goal is to help you get rid of that pain, so that you can start to move freely again.

We do this through two different ways, “manual therapy” and “mobility” exercises.

What is Manual Therapy?

(picture of me doing a hip stretch)

Not all problems can be fixed with stretching or exercise.  There are parts of the body that need to be fixed with certain “hands on techniques” that your Doctor of Physical Therapy will be able to perform.

This might include:

  • Trigger point release to reduce tension and “knots” built up in stiff muscles
  • “Myofascial release” to reduce the effects of inflammation and scar tissue that builds up on your body
  • Hands-on “stretching” methods that will target specifically the muscles that need to be stretched

The goal of these techniques is simple: To alleviate your pain so you can move freely

No, it’s not like “Chiropractic” where we will crack your bones, and it’s not like any massage you’ve ever had.  It is a much more “gentle”, “targeted” approach.

It is common to feel a “bit” of soreness with these techniques, most it will mostly come in the form of that “Good Pain” that your body knows that something positive is happening.

Then, to make sure that the pain doesn’t just come back the next day, we will instruct you in a personalized set of exercises that you can perform easily at home to make sure the pain stays away.

Step 4: Restore Your Mind-Body Connection Through Strengthening

Once you are feeling better, we want to make sure you STAY better..

Often times I’ll hear of people who have finally relieved their pain, but are too afraid to return to exercise, travel, or still avoid doing certain activities due to fear of the pain coming back.

Whereas true healing and restoration means that you should be able to fully trust your body, live your normal life WITHOUT thinking about your pain.

And in order to achieve this, you have to “strengthen” the connection between your mind and body through exercise.

The thing is, with any pain, or injury, your body becomes weak in certain areas. And unless those muscles have been re-trained with the proper exercise, you will still feel vulnerable, and not quite “100%”.

By strengthening, I'm not just talking about “bulking up”, lifting heavy weights, or going to the gym 5 times a week.

Instead, we use strengthening exercises as a way to help you redevelop trust and confidence within your own body again.

Our strength programs involve very simple, but highly effective exercises that focus on re-strengthening your nervous system, and mind-body connection.

These can be done easily from your own home, with minimal equipment.

And the program will be specifically tailored to your level of activity, and towards your goals.

Yes, exercise is important, but not as important as doing the right exercises at the right time, for when your body is truly ready for it.

Our Program Will Be Specially Designed For You

Remember, our practice is built on focusing on one patient at a time.  Creating a personalized, individualized plan to help you heal.

Whether you:

  • Want to be able to get back to exercise class
  • Want to go on hikes, or trips with the family
  • Don't want to do anything ‘crazy’ like run a marathon, but instead just want to get back to living a normal life without pain

We will be sure to take the time to thoroughly explain each and every one of our techniques and that you understand, and are comfortable with what we will do for you.

When we develop an exercise program for you, we will ensure your program is safe, effective, and that you have proper understanding of the right “form” and “technique”.

And upon completion of your program, you can expect:

  • To be able to move around freely and exercise free of pain
  • To redevelop confidence and certainty within your body that you can do house chores, or play with your kids or grandkids without ANY worry of your body hurting the next day
  • Be able to stand, walk, and go about your normal day without having to constantly “think” about your pain
  • Be able to sit, drive, and travel comfortably
  • Get back to feeling like your old self again

While it IS entirely possible to fix your sciatic nerve pain completely, we know full well that this type of treatment isn’t for everyone.

Sciatica is a problem that develops over time, and a “magic pill” or “quick fix” will never lead to long lasting permanent relief.

So if you are just looking for a quick fix, or magic pill, and have no intention of taking an active role in your recovery, then we are not the clinic for you.

But if you ARE someone who is truly health conscious, willing to take an active role in your recovery, and want nothing more than to get back to living a normal, active lifestyle, then I can say with the utmost confidence we will be able to help you.

Which is why we offer a free 30-minute “discovery visit” for us to make sure we’re a good fit, and to make sure you feel comfortable with us before we work with you to develop a full treatment plan.

Kevin Mao

PT, DPT

Kevin, like most physical therapists, got hurt at an early age as an athlete in high school. Having gone through multiple shoulder dislocations and surgery, he had his fill of PT at a young age. Even though getting injured and having to have surgery was painful, he was curious about the fact that he actually “enjoyed going to PT”, because he was able to learn about his body in ways he was never taught! This curiosity drove him to study Kinesiology at Penn State University in 2008, and he finally graduated with his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Boston University in 2011.

He originally wanted to work with pro athletes and travel with sports teams, but after several years of clinical practice, Kevin actually found his true calling was to help the aging population, those 45+, stay healthy, active, and free of painkillers and unnecessary surgeries. He is passionate about being able to use his advanced knowledge of biomechanics, physiology and neurophysiology, to take complicated orthopedic problems and turn them into simple, easy to understand solutions.

He is a pure hands-on manual therapist, receiving elite mentorship working at one of the most prestigious orthopedic rehabilitation clinics in San Francisco. He has worked side by side with world class surgeons from Stanford, SOAR clinic, and professional/Olympic level athletes.

He has also dedicated his entire career to developing effective, efficient and challenging rehabilitative exercise programs, that have a PURE emphasis on safety, and creating body awareness. He has consulted with the world’s most renowned bio-mechanists and strength-physiology experts, and has brought years of knowledge gained from experts around the world to bring it to the people right here in Dublin.

In his spare time, he loves nothing more than to relax at home with his loving wife, step daughter, and in-laws. He is also an avid basketball, boxing, and mixed martial arts fan, enjoys fishing, fantasy basketball and strategic card games.
